Helpful hints for your application

Greetings. It’s nice to see you here trolling our website. I figured it would be a nice thing to extend a helping hand to the people applying to our guild, so as to maximize your chances of finding a home here.

So, without further delay, here is what we look for in an application to our guild:

1. Answer the questions specifically and honestly and do not leave questions unanswered. For example…

Question:  Time Availability

How many hours difference from server time? Arathor is a Pacific (PST) timezone server. What days/times are you available? Are you able to make scheduled raids and be prepared and on time?

Good Answer:

“I am in the Pacific timezone. I am available M-F, from 3pm to 11:30pm ST. I will make all scheduled raids from M-F, and had 95% attendance in my previous guild. I will bring my own consumables to raids. I’ve always done this without fail. I cannot raid on Saturday and Sunday as this time is dedicated to cliff diving.”

(and then actually does this)

Bad Answers:

“I can make most of your raids.”

(Didn’t put timezone, and what the heck is “most”?)

“I can make your raids.”

(That’s nice. The question is WILL you, and why should we believe this vague and unarticulated answer?)

“I like to raid and will do my best to make your raids.”

(Right…)

2. Write in complete sentences.

We cannot stress how important it is for you to write in complete sentences. Your application to our guild is not a text message.  Below, we have provided you with examples of actual sentences we’ve received in our applications, both good and bad. Names have been withheld to protect the careless.

Good Sentences:

“I hope you like my application and I look forward to proving that I am as good as I claim to be.”
“I have L68-70 blues, and a few tier 3 pieces that I haven’t been able to upgrade.”

Bad Sentences:
(Hint: There are online spelling and grammar checkers. Use them.)

“Ive said all i can please take my aplication into heart and mind =) “
“er… idk what that means… but i have sets of armor”
“lol i no i hav gud armor”

Note: If English is a second language to you, PUT THAT IN YOUR APP. We will require you to be able to understand what we are saying over vent, and to read written strategies and notices. The “being able to write” thing is to filter out Americans who have some degree of mental retardation or are ten years old, not to exclude people from other countries who may not be proficient at English but are otherwise cognitively sound.

3. Show that you have skill

To be an asset to a raiding guild, you need to have above average reaction time, excellent “situational awareness”, and good “twitch” decision making. The worst enemy of any raiding guild is the “nice” and “sweet” guild member who stands in fire or, when told to run easterly, keyboard turns in circles in a confused manner, forgets to use their healthstone and promptly dies. The second worst enemy of the raiding guild is the normally good player who is afk or distracted 10% of the time and constantly runs into patrols, misses their readychecks, or forgets to heal their assignment. I’m sure you have met both types.

You need to not be either of these types and you need to prove that to us in your application. WWS parses are an excellent way to show that you have skill and are a consistent, reliable player. Serious cross-realm applicants should include WWS parses in their application.

4. A well developed Main

We want to see that you have access to trade patterns/plans/etc. that aren’t held by most people. We like to see reputation with factions that is above average. We like to see enchants on your gear. All of these things indicate that you take pride in your character, and endeavor to do a good job. We want to fill our guild up with people who try hard, and want to progress. It’s clear to us that people who have these characteristics tend to make better guildies.

We hope this helps. Good luck on your application.
